SEO-ing time

I haven’t touched about SEO yet, although it plays quite an important role in making money with your blog/website. I don’t much remember what I did with this blog SEO-wise, except to change the default Wordpress ID (e.g ?p=302) URL links to SEO-friendly URL link. I guessed that helps in getting the search engines to index your site even better. Just take an example of my recent post about the ASB loan. Somehow, I think this blog template helps as well - please bear in mind that this blog is only 2 weeks old.

When I get Google to search for “ASB loan”, my blogpost came up 6th.

SEO - ASB loan - Google
search term “ASB loan”

When using the search term “Maybank ASB loan”, the same blogpost ranks higher up at 3rd.
SEO - ASB loan - Google 2
search term “maybank ASB loan”

What did I do? Simple.

1. If you are using Wordpress, change you default URL link in Dashboard -> Options -> Permalinks to “Date and Name based” from “Default”. After you have clicked on Update Permalink Structure, you’ll need to append the given codes into your .htaccess file. If you are using other blog hosting software, you might want to find something similar and implement it.

2. Get a Google sitemap. How do i do that? Go to this sitemap generator that i used - http://www.freesitemapgenerator.com. Create a new account and proceed to get your sitemap generated for you. It will take a while before your sitemap is generated for you - i got mine in 2 days.

3. Upload your sitemap to Google at it’s webmasters tool. Let Google do wonders with the sitemap :)

I guessed that’s it, besides getting another template to play around. I’m experimenting with more SEO techniques, and if i got better with the experimented search terms above, I’ll post it here :)

useful, but its a pity freesitemapgenerator.com doesn’t work with blogspot accounts.

lingghezhi - not only freesitemapgenerator. apparently, Google sitemaps don’t work with any Blogspot blogs at all. in order for you to use sitemap, you’ll need to be able to upload files to your blog host - something which you can’t do with Blogspot. maybe it’s time to get your own domain & host? :)

Sitemaps are handy of course, but not the be-all-and-end-all for blogs, which have a good rich and descriptive link structure naturally.

Probably a more important area upon which to focus is obtaining relevant links - preferably ones with a high PageRank - from thematically related sites. Whilst on-page SEO is certainly crucial, every on-page effort is multiplied massively with off-page work. A few thoughts on my recent post on this exact matter:

    …may be of interest.

    Best wishes.

Yes. As I always said, the Google site map really does a great work in Search Engine Optimization.
