I never rented out a place for myself, although i have helped my friends to find tenants for their house. Some of my friends that lived out of states usually get me to help them advertise their house for rent. Most of the time, all I did was to visit convenience stores like 7-11 and advertise it over there. I’m aware of the Internet service for renting out house – i’ve seen them in action.
I guessed by advertising online, you reach a bigger target area. There’s a lot of people I know who look for house to rent online – i was one of them previously – so I can vouch for the usability. The problem with advertising online is you have to know where to do it, and how to do it. Of course – the cost involved and the traffic that you’ll be getting is counted too.
